Ala Moana is a commercial, retail and residential district prominently located in the center of urban Honolulu. Home to the Ala Moana Center, the largest open-air shopping center in the world, and Ala Moana Beach Park, an iconic 100-acre beach side park popular amongst locals. It is considered one of the most important neighborhoods in Honolulu, as it bridges the gap between tourist districts and locals.
Recently there has been a flurry of development activity as demand for new housing, hotel rooms and retail surges upwards. When the rail eventually finishes the Ala Moana station, look for new hotel-condominium projects to sprout such as Sky Ala Moana , Residences at Mandarin Oriental , and 1500 Kapiolani .

Developments will mainly be built along Kapiolani Boulevard which is the main artery of the city and links Downtown Honolulu, Ala Moana and Waikiki together. Development along this Boulevard makes sense as there are many underutilized low-use commercial spaces which are prime for redevelopment. The Ala Moana rail station will be located on Kona Street, one block behind Kapiolani making it an easy walk for residents who will occupy these new buildings.
