Hokua, completed in 2006, is an ultra-luxury condominium located in the heart of Kakaako. It was considered to be the first premier ultra-luxury high-rise in Honolulu. Unlike most condos at the time, Hokua offered spacious floor plans with unobstructed ocean views, high ceilings and resort style amenities which set a new standard for luxury developers in Honolulu.
The $210 million project was developed by Kobayashi Group and The Macnaughton Group (One Ala Moana, Park Lane) and designed by Benjamin Woo Architects. The 41-story tower features 248 residences and a mixed-use podium which includes 2 restaurants, Bank of Hawaii, salons and office spaces.
Hokua has a 3rd floor recreation deck with resort-style amenities. Although built in 2006, Hokua’s amenities have been well maintained and beat out many other condos that have been built more recently.

There are 248 high-end residences at Hokua. Floors 4-35 consists of 7 residences - six 2-bedrooms (1,524 – 1,981 SF) and one 3-bedroom (2,320- 2,354 SF) per floor. The Penthouse units are on Floors 36-40 and feature larger 3-bedroom (2,222 – 3,056 SF) and 4-bedroom (4,164-4,415 SF) residences only.
The residences feature 9’ ceilings and were designed to have ample space to “feel” like a single family home rather than a condominium. There are no 1-bedrooms in the building and the smallest 2-bedroom is over 1,500 SF. For comparison, in most other condo buildings a 1,000 SF 2-bedroom would be considered huge.
Original finishes were carpet and stone flooring, although many residents have upgraded to hardwood through the years. The “wet room” design of the bathrooms feature separated showers and free standing tubs. Kitchen appliance are Sub-Zero and Wolf.
All units come with Lanais, although small (most are around 30SF). This has been one of the only criticisms of the building throughout the years. Huge sliding glass doors help to open up the units a bit more.
Like its neighbor, Nauru Tower, Hokua features a single-loaded design (all units are ocean facing) ensuring spectacular ocean and park views for every unit. Views are unobstructed and will remain so as long as Ala Moana beach park does. Sunset, fireworks, Diamond Head, these views have it all.
The “D” Residence is considered the best in the building and feautures an unbelievable “270” degree panoramic view from Diamond Head to Ewa. These units rarely come on the market however.
Hokua is perfectly situated at the forefront of Kakaako, adjacent to Ala Moana Shopping Center and Ward Village Shops on either side. Ala Moana Beach Park is directly across the street for beach access. Whole Foods and Foodland Farms provide walkable (5 mins) fresh grocery options. New high-end restaurants Merrimans and Nobu are a 5 minute walk in addition to Panya and Tango which are located on the ground floor. Bank of Hawaii is also located on the ground floor for convenient banking access.
